Salmon Netting
Mesh size range 3-1/4” to 3-1/2” (83mm to 89mm) often with some larger 5”(127mm) or 7” (178mm) netting next to the leadline.
Salmon seining is unique because the net is generally held open, by a boat (seine vessel and its skiff) towing on each end for 20-25 minutes.
The netting has historically always been tarred nylon netting. I introduced 100% UHMWPE netting to this fishery in 2010. It was immediately apparent that a sinking version was needed so I introduced a UHMWPE/Polyester blend. Both types of materials, nylon and UHMWPE, have their place in this fishery. Those who want to be able to tow their nets and make forward progress have to consider UHMWPE, or getting a more powerful vessel, or both.
