Anchovies & Sardines
Mesh size range 9/16” to 7/8” (14mm to 22mm) usually with some larger mesh netting next to the leadline.
These nets are bulky due to the small mesh size. They tend to be expensive because of the volume of material but also due to the increased labor cost of working with small mesh.
The netting has historically always been tarred nylon netting. I introduced 100% UHMWPE seines to the US sardine fishery in 2012. It was immediately successful. I introduced a combination sardine/anchovy net in Europe in 2016 and it too is very successful. Both types of materials, nylon and UHMWPE, have their place in this fishery. My nets focus on fast sinking but also being good at getting over bad ground with less danger of damaging the net.
